Balance of Plant (BoP) Solutions for Industrial Gas & Hydrogen Systems
Brise Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. — India’s trusted engineering company for end-to-end Balance of Plant (BoP) systems designed for hydrogen electrolysis, industrial gas generation, and advanced chemical processing plants.
What is Balance of Plant (BoP)?
Balance of Plant (BoP) refers to all the supporting systems, auxiliary equipment, and utility infrastructure that surrounds and enables the core process unit of an industrial plant to operate safely and efficiently.
In the context of green hydrogen production and alkaline electrolysis, the electrolyzer is the heart — but without a well-engineered BoP, it simply cannot function. The BoP includes everything from water treatment and cooling systems to electrical distribution, safety interlocks, and SCADA control systems
What Does Balance of Plant Include?
At Brise Chemicals, our BoP packages are fully customized and typically cover:
1. Piping & Valve Systems
- Process piping for hydrogen, oxygen, water, and electrolyte circuits
- Utility piping for cooling, purging, and drainage
- Safety-rated valves, pressure relief systems, and isolation assemblies
2. Cooling & Heat Exchange Systems
- Shell-and-tube and plate heat exchangers
- Cooling towers and closed-loop cooling water circuits
- Thermal management for long-duration electrolyzer operation
3. Power Distribution & Electrical Panels
- Low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear
- Rectifier integration for DC power supply to electrolyzers
- Earthing, surge protection, and UPS systems
4. Instrumentation & Control Systems (PLC / SCADA)
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) for automated plant operation
- SCADA systems for real-time monitoring, data logging, and remote control
- Flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, and level indicators
5. Gas Compression, Storage & Buffer Systems
- Hydrogen and oxygen compression trains
- High-pressure storage vessels and buffer tanks
- Gas manifold systems for distribution to end-use points
6. Water Treatment & Utility Management
- Demineralized (DM) water systems for electrolyzer feed water
- KOH (potassium hydroxide) mixing and handling systems for alkaline electrolyzers
- Effluent treatment and waste management systems
7. Safety Systems & Emergency Interlocks
- Gas detection systems (hydrogen, oxygen, toxic gases)
- Fire suppression and emergency shutdown (ESD) systems
- Pressure safety valves (PSV), flame arrestors, and blast protection
- Safety interlocks designed per international standards
Why Balance of Plant Matters for Green Hydrogen Projects
With India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission pushing for 5 MMTPA of green hydrogen by 2030, the demand for reliable BoP systems is growing rapidly. An optimized Balance of Plant directly impacts:
- Plant Availability — Well-designed BoP reduces unplanned shutdowns
- Energy Efficiency — Efficient cooling and power systems lower electricity consumption per kg of H₂
- Safety — Hydrogen is highly flammable; proper BoP ensures no compromise on protection
- CAPEX & OPEX — Smart BoP design reduces both capital investment and operating costs
- Compliance — Meets PESO, ATEX, IEC, and IS standards required in India

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between the electrolyzer and Balance of Plant?
The electrolyzer is the core unit where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. The Balance of Plant (BoP) includes all supporting systems — water supply, power electronics, cooling, gas handling, safety systems, and controls — that allow the electrolyzer to operate reliably at scale.
- How it Works: It operates using a liquid alkaline electrolyte solution, typically containing 20-30% potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
- Core Components: A porous diaphragm separates the cathode and anode, which prevents the generated hydrogen and oxygen from mixing while allowing hydroxyl ions (OH-) to pass through.
Because it is a cost-effective and established technology, it is widely used for large-scale industrial hydrogen manufacturing.
Is Balance of Plant different for alkaline vs PEM electrolyzers?
Alkaline electrolyzers require KOH electrolyte management systems, gas-liquid separators, and specific corrosion-resistant piping. PEM systems require ultra-pure deionized water and different compression stages. Brise Chemicals designs BoP specifically for each electrolyzer type.
Can Brise Chemicals supply BoP for third-party electrolyzers?
We design and supply Balance of Plant packages that integrate with electrolyzers from any manufacturer. Our engineering team reviews the OEM specifications and designs a compatible BoP package.
What certifications does Brise Chemicals hold for BoP systems?
Our systems are designed and manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 (Quality), ISO 14001:2015 (Environment), and ISO 45001:2018 (Safety). We also comply with PESO (India), IEC standards, and ATEX directives for hazardous area equipment.
Do you offer AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) for BoP systems?
Brise Chemicals offers comprehensive AMC and CMC (Comprehensive Maintenance Contract) services for all BoP systems we supply, ensuring maximum uptime and performance throughout the plant lifecycle.
Where is Brise Chemicals located and do you serve pan-India clients?
We are based in Pune, Maharashtra, India and serve clients across India including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and other states. We also support export projects.
