The electrolyzer is the core unit where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. The Balance of Plant (BoP) includes all supporting systems — water supply, power electronics, cooling, gas handling, safety systems, and controls — that allow the electrolyzer to operate reliably at scale.

  • How it Works: It operates using a liquid alkaline electrolyte solution, typically containing 20-30% potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
  • Core Components: A porous diaphragm separates the cathode and anode, which prevents the generated hydrogen and oxygen from mixing while allowing hydroxyl ions (OH-) to pass through.

Because it is a cost-effective and established technology, it is widely used for large-scale industrial hydrogen manufacturing.

Alkaline electrolyzers require KOH electrolyte management systems, gas-liquid separators, and specific corrosion-resistant piping. PEM systems require ultra-pure deionized water and different compression stages. Brise Chemicals designs BoP specifically for each electrolyzer type.
